The evening of the bare Kings
Louis Stift (2005-02-01)

Untitled Document

Bucuresti, 10-2-2005

Duplicate at 07-02-2005.

Difficult boards, sorted out. It was the evening of the bare Kings, on 4 out of 22 we had to play, and when you count the 2 we had no opponents, 5 out of 24. Too much to call this an averidge distribution.

Not the most elegant bidding. If you see NS K must be with East or sec with West. After the bidding with East is more likely. Without interference 6 is 50%. 6 has a less %, because the can be divided 4-1. The top will be 6NT, but can you reach this? Nice for a bidding quiz.

K

Slag1: A and yes, the K was bare.

Slag2,3: Q and A

Slag3: K, in East discarded, South ruffs.

After that the trumps were divided 2-2, so only 3 trumptricks were lost.

At the end an example of the difficulty of the boards:

What now?

We have the following agreements:

3 promises a 4-card , gf, denies a -stop.

3 promises a 5-kaart , gf.

Dbl promises values, defend on points.

What do you choose?

West said dbl. If South has points, then reaching North will be difficult. And 2 down is vulnerable -500. Not on this board. After K two times was played.

South lost 3 -tricks, A and 2 -tricks.

In 3NT you make simple 9 tricks.

4 becomes difficult, when you think South has points.

After the third is overruffed and North showed already K, Q, Q, do you play A and x ? This is right if the outstanding now are divided 2-2 or, you guessed it, K is bare.

On this board you lose 3 -tricks and a .

I, East, was minus 1 if I had to play this.

Louis, the Dutch player.
